An estate-planning document that can direct property at death, nominate an executor, and nominate a guardian. It does not necessarily control every asset.
## Working notes
[[Cal. Prob. Code § 6122]] generally revokes specified gifts and appointments involving a former spouse after divorce or annulment, unless the will provides otherwise. Legal separation is different.
[[Cal. Fam. Code § 2040]] permits making, changing, or revoking a will during divorce, while other restrictions may still affect transfers and beneficiary designations.
> [!tip] Guardian nomination
> A nomination records a preference. It does not itself award custody or override a surviving parent’s rights.
